Digital Camera Auto Modes

Using the auto mode on a digital camera gives you a point and shoot camera that allows you to concentrate on the subject while the camera makes the necessary settings to give you a well exposed and properly focused image.

But like most automatic features, knowing how they function will help you keep the camera from getting fooled in those special situations that often yield the most dramatic photos…. such as backlighting, or when your main subject is off-center.

In this section we look at the four main components of the automatic mode … focus, exposure, white balance and flash.

Understanding Autoexposure

Autoexposure controls the amount of light that is used to expose the camera’s image sensor. It does this by adjusting the shutter speed and f-stop.

How White Balance Works

All digital cameras have an auto white balance setting that allows the camera to detect the color of the light and balance it correctly.

How AutoFlash Works

Autoflash on a digital camera is designed to automatically fire the flash when there is not enough light to get a good exposure.

How Autofocus Works

Autofocus is an important feature on digital cameras and knowing how the camera focuses the lens will help you use it properly.
