Canon’s newest dSLR, the EOS Rebel SL1, is being offered as an alternative to the popular compact system camera market. You may recall that last year Canon entered the mirrorless interchangeable lens market with the EOS M. These small compact system cameras have the advantage of smaller point and shoots, but with the added feature of interchangeable lenses.
However, Canon has now added a new option to those looking for a smaller, lighter camera … and it seems to have done it without giving up much of the functionality of it’s larger Rebel series models.
Here’s what the experts at DPReview have to say …
Canon unveils EOS 100D/Rebel SL1 world’s smallest and lightest APS-C DSLR
Canon has announced the EOS 100D/Rebel SL1, the world’s smallest, lightest DSLR. It shares the 18MP resolution, DIGIC 5 processor, 3″ touchscreen and 1080p30 video capability of the mirrorless EOS M. The camera does introduce much wider scene coverage of Canon’s Hybrid AF system and shoots at up to 4 fps. The 100D has a recommended price of $799.99/£799 with the co-announced EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM kit lens.

The Canon EOS Rebel SL1 18.0 MP CMOS Digital SLR with 18-55mm EF-S IS STM Lens is due to be available from Amazon on April 30,2013. If interested you might want to pre-order this camera as Amazon is expecting high demand and very limited product supply from Canon. I suspect this smaller and lighter trend will become very popular for those who like the advantages of a dSLR, but find the size and weight to be somewhat of a disadvantage.
